Electrical transformers are invisible. Not
literally, of course. What I mean is that nobody
sees them once they are installed. We all sort
of forget about them. They just do their
important job quietly, keeping all of our
electrical devices happy.
I suppose that’s why we don’t think of them
when it comes to saving energy – until now.
The Department of Energy is going green with
the rest of us, and that means changing how
transformers are built. The story in this issue gives
you more details, but suffice to say that we’re
going to have to give a little to save a lot.
It will be worth it, though. One of the nice parts
about the utility industry is that even small
changes can make a big difference in the long
term. These new transformers will save huge
amounts of electricity over the years. That might
not seem too important now, but for generations
to come, it will be critical. Best of all, there will be
some short-term gains, as well. Less wasted energy
means more efficiency. And more efficiency
means that utilities don’t need to build as many
new power plants.
Nobody said that saving the planet was going to
be easy. Thankfully, companies like GE are
developing ways to meet these new requirements
in ways that make sense, both environmentally
and financially.
There are more changes coming; you can count
on it. Here at DSG, we’re working with
manufacturers to give you good solutions to
the tough questions that come with new
requirements and regulations. Going green isn’t
going to be a problem, as long as we all work
together. Instead, going green can be a golden
opportunity for progress, growth and innovation.
