Are you ready for LEED? I guess that’s sort of
a rhetorical question, considering the fact that
the Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System
is already here. Maybe I should ask, how are
you making LEED work for you?
LEED is a voluntary system created by the
U.S. Green Building Council (a nonprofit
group made up of contractors, architects,
government officials and more) for identifying
what makes a building “green.” One of the
most important measures is water efficiency,
but things like sustainability, materials and
resources are important, as well.
LEED works on a point system, which allows
buildings to be rated and even compared.
The more points you earn, the more
environmentally sustainable your building is.
It would be easy to see LEED as a negative
thing: here's yet another set of rules that we
have to follow. But there are two points that
I’d like for you to think about. First, it looks
like LEED is here to stay. Second, LEED isn’t
just good for the environment; it can be
good for business, as well.
More and more construction projects are
being built with LEED certification in mind
(some city governments have even started to
require it). That means that those who
understand the ins and outs of LEED have a
huge advantage over those who don’t. In the
waterworks business, that means knowing
exactly how to achieve positive results when it
comes to meeting LEED’s measurements of
water efficiency.
Once you become a LEED expert, chances
are you'll find that more and more people ask
for your advice – and services. Education is the
first step to understanding LEED. Start by visiting
www.usgbc.org. It’s also important to have a
partner that can help you find LEED-friendly
products. That’s where DSG comes in. We stay
on top of new technology so you don’t have to.
We work hard to put the most innovative, most
environmentally sound products in the hands
of our customers. Give us a call and find out
for yourself. Let’s put LEED to work for you.
